There are several opportunities for companies to engage with Penn State through senior capstone programs. These programs provide an entry point for companies into the vast resources of the University. PennTAP is available to help companies navigate and connect with these invaluable resources to uncover the benefits of working with a world-class university.
PennTAP advisor, Greg Cesare, will be joined by Dr. Vittal Prabhu who will present an overview of the Service Enterprise Engineering (SEE360) initiative in the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department at Penn State. The service sector represents over 80% of the economy with industries that are quite varied in terms of information intensity. Many industry segments of the vast service sector suffer low quality and productivity. Good, timely decisions can provide significant productivity improvements, especially in labor-intense service systems, which could provide a boost in the nations lagging productivity.
Our objective is to investigate opportunities for data-driven decisions in such service systems by applying engineering techniques. In this talk, we will present an overview of the SEE360 initiative at Penn State and several on-going projects in which IE/OR techniques are being applied to under-engineered services to improve quality and productivity. These include workforce optimization for cleaning services under COVID-19 protocol, using an open source ERP for managing creamery operations, modeling tacit processes that inflate flow times, and modeling truck fleet and spare parts inventory for maintenance services.
