Design and manufacturing professionals, production operators, and quality technicians will gain skill in the interpretation and application of geometric controls. Emphasis will be on interpreting and measuring geometric tolerances, and selecting and applying the proper geometric controls to satisfy design requirements.

Course Objective:

At completion of this course, the learners will be able to:

  • Read and interpret geometric symbols as they are stated on an engineering drawing.
  • Recognize and describe the use of other ASME Y14.5M-1994 drawing symbols.
  • State the basic differences between the ASME and ISO dimensioning standards.
  • Select the appropriate tolerance based on design function requirements.
  • State design requirements using the minimum amount of dimensioning.
  • Describe the basic rules of GD&T.
  • Allocate maximum tolerances to designs.
  • Create complete, clutter-free drawings.
  • Communicate how parts work by using the language of GD&T.
  • Describe manufacturing methods of generating geometric characteristics.
  • State techniques and methods for measuring geometric characteristics.
  • Dimension drawings consistent with ASME Y14.5-2009
  • Choose the correct tolerance for control of coaxial features
  • Identify common errors found on drawings and describe how to avoid them.
  • Describe the advantage of position tolerancing in contrast to the conventional coordinate system.
  • State the advantages of using MMC or LMC principles in designs.
  • Understand the proper application of MMC and LMC principles.
  • Distinguish part features that are suitable for use as datum references.

Instructor: Jerome T. Sobrowski, ASME certified GD&T professional, Six Sigma Master Belt. Jerry has held positions in training and education, operations management and quality engineering, spending most of his career at LORD Corporation. He holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Gannon University.
