The Role of Internal Audits in ISO 9001 Compliance

ISO 9001:2015 requires manufacturers to establish a systematic internal audit program to evaluate the effectiveness of their quality management system (QMS). Clause 9.2.2 states that audits should be conducted based on process importance, prior audit findings, and risk-based thinking. To ensure objectivity and accuracy, internal auditors are properly trained, competent, and independent from the processes they review. Organizations should define audit frequency, methodology, and reporting guidelines, ensuring that audits effectively identify areas for improvement. In a manufacturing environment, in-house auditors play a vital role in assessing production control measures, verifying compliance with documented procedures, and identifying potential process optimizations. Regular audits strengthen quality control efforts, minimize nonconformities, and reinforce a culture of continuous improvement.

In July 2025, professionals seeking to deepen their expertise in ISO 9001:2015 auditing have two excellent opportunities to do just that. ISO 9001 Internal Auditor sessions will be held in Erie (July 16) and St Marys (July 16-18). Both provide participants with hands-on auditing techniques to assess and improve ISO 9001:2015 quality management systems, ensuring compliance and operational excellence. The 1-day session scheduled for Erie is a little different, as it provides a blended learning option to do online learning in advance of the practical auditing session. See more at: nwirc.org/events.
