For companies who have embarked on applying lean thinking and practices, they may not have thought about the role of the management reporting information and the accounting team in supporting this transformation. Jean Cunningham, as a CFO of two manufacturing companies and consultant to lean organizations, has lived this change and found a new improved role for accounting to provide better value information to the organization as well as reduced the effort required for accounting operations. Cunningham is the co-author of Real Numbers, along with Orest Fiume. Their book offers personal experiences that illustrate the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of lean accounting. The management accounting model illustrated in -Real Numbers- points the way to unlocking the true profit potential of lean.
NWIRC will offer a Lean Accounting workshop on October 24, 2017, featuring instructor Jean Cunningham, so companies in our region can learn from her experiences and insights. Participants will also receive a copy of Real Numbers. During this one-day workshop, Cunningham will share:
- Five sources of financial improvement with lean
- Improving cost management reporting to improve usefulness while simplifying at the same time
- Utilizing information in the accounting records to help identify upstream process improvement opportunities
- Use of metrics for performance monitoring
- Applying lean concepts to reduce waste in accounting operations
Cunningham has served as CFO and VP of Company Services at Lantech, LLC and Marshfield Door Systems, Inc. It was during these tenures that she developed her lean acumen, driving lean from the manufacturing floor into the business functions to include finance, information systems, human resources, telecommunications, and others. She has a BS in Accounting from Indiana University and an MBA from Northeastern University’s Executive Program.
